At points seeming like a solid mid-table side, he has also been involved in relegation six-pointers and featured in some impressive football betting upsets.

How much do you know about Cunha? What’s his contract situation? Let’s learn a bit more about Wolves’ star man…

How Much Is Matheus Cunha Worth?

Matheus Cunha net worth is thought to be between £5 million and £10 million.

Cunha is on a decent salary at Wolves and will have been paid a significant sum during his period with Atletico Madrid.

Wolves aren’t the highest-paying team in the Premier League, and Cunha’s off-field earnings aren’t going to be huge. Still, he is earning more than the average UK annual salary per week.

The Brazilian has previously worn Nike and Umbro boots. His endorsement revenue will not be as big as some of his Premier League peers, but his boot deals will have pocketed him some extra cash.

Contract

Matheus Cunha signed a four-year contract when he joined Wolves in the 2023 January transfer window. Cunha is apparently reluctant to extend that deal while Wolves are at threat of relegation.

The current contract expires at the end of the 2026-27 campaign. Cunha is tied for the 215th-largest salary in the Premier League with Anthony Gordon, Danny Welbeck, and various others.

According to Spotrac, there are 96 Premier League players earning at least double of Cunha’s current salary in the 2024-25 season.

Kit Number

Matheus Cunha wears the number 10 for Wolves. Cunha switched from 12 – which he had worn since signing with the club – to 10 before the 2024-25 season.

Wolves offered all owners of a Cunha 12 shirt the chance to swap it for a number 10 version.

The list of former Wolves number 10s features Derek Dougan, Mel Eves, Andy Gray, Robbie Keane, Steven Fletcher, Bakary Sako, Daniel Podence, and Helder Costa.

Transfer

Wolves signed Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid in January 2023. It was the first signing of Julen Lopetegui’s tenure.

Upon signing Cunha, Lopetegui said, "I feel that he is a very complete forward.

“He has a good condition and good skills, not only technically, but physically, because this is England and in the Premier League you have to be very combative if you want to survive."

Manchester United

Manchester United have repeatedly been linked with Matheus Cunha. Cunha could play on either wing for the Red Devils or operate as a second striker alongside Rasmus Hojlund.

Arsenal and Liverpool also reportedly have interest in the Brazilian forward. Wolves would apparently be looking for over £60 million to part ways with Cunha.

Position

Matheus Cunha is comfortable playing anywhere across the frontline. Adept as a centre forward, second striker, or playing on either flank, Cunha’s versatility has been a real asset for Wolves.

In December 2024, Tim Sherwood heaped praise on Cunha’s skillset during an Amazon Prime broadcast.

"He's top drawer. Got a bit of everything but certainly goals. Good touch, great awareness around him and can play as a forward or just off the front man making those forward runs."

Sherwood identified Cunha as a potential Liverpool or Arsenal player. Being accomplished in multiple positions will make him an asset for any top team.

Wolves manager Gary O’Neil was equally positive about his star man.

“He's worked very hard and he's a really humble guy. When I first came, he was big enough and open enough to accept the gaps that he had in his game, and then he’s just gone head on into trying to tackle them and trying to piece the bits together.

“The most important bit in any footballer is quality, and that's the bit he has in abundance.

“All the other stuff you can work on with him, around positioning and mentality to defend and get back under the ball – all that is workable.

“What you can't help players with is the quality that they have and the understanding that they have, and Matheus is top level at that.

“We love having him here, he's an exceptional player, he’s incredibly important to the group and to the football club, and I look forward to working with him for as long as possible.”

Release Clause

Matheus Cunha signed for Wolves on loan with a potential obligation to buy in December 2022.

Details of the obligation were not made public at the time, but in January 2023 it was reported that Cunha only had to make three appearances for Wolves for the deal to become permanent.

Cunha reached that threshold in January 2023, confirming his transfer to the West Midlands for £44 million.

When the deal was announced, Cunha said, “I’m excited to play in the Premier League, to play in Wolverhampton. And I think the most important point is that I’m happy like a kid. [Lopetegui’s] a big coach, he has a big mentality.”
